Should you ever encounter Standin’ Tall in the wild, make sure to take a close gander at the bird’s nest of frame and suspension componentry you’ll be greeted by some repurposed street signs and a little folk art in the form of a tiny “piston man” caricature welded from connecting rods. We’re loving Standin’ Tall’s rugged “Work is play-right?” exterior patina, not to mention the still-muddy 64-inch tires mounted on a set of 26-by-20-inch custom-built wheels. “Big” Mike Willhite built the big-block Ford V-8, which sends its output to a C6 automatic transmission, a SCS Gearset transfer case, and a pair of Rockwell five-ton top-loader axles. The mighty spawn of the Willhite clan, this custom started life as a Shelby Township, Michigan, fire truck, and it belongs to Chris Willhite. Question: What measures eleven feet, six inches tall and nine feet wide, has room for two, and can reduce the average roadside vegetable stand into a pile of splinters at will? This year, eight vehicles were selected as finalists for the Ridler award, with one car taking the prize. To be eligible, a vehicle must never have been shown anywhere else before its Autorama debut-not even in photos online. It’s hard to choose a favorite among the show cars crowding the convention-center floor, but the folks who put on Autorama make it their duty to crown a “best in show,” dubbed the Ridler award, to the vehicle that best combines “creativity, engineering, and quality workmanship.” The prize’s full name is the Don Ridler Memorial Award, which honors Autorama’s original promoter, and it was first given out in 1964.
This year’s 65th annual Autorama contained more than 800 vehicles ranging from trailer queens to daily drivers, both imports and domestics. Notably, Cobo also houses Autorama, a custom-car and hot-rod show that brings together some of the finest custom-made vehicles from throughout North America. While the Detroit auto show may be Cobo Center’s big-ticket automotive event, it’s certainly not the only vehicular gathering held within the confines of the nearly 60-year-old convention center.
